Actually the real problem is that scientists no longer have the visual acuity that they used to. Back in the day, Edward Jenner found a vaccine to smallpox even before anyone knew what viruses were, so he must have had amazing vision...
Or maybe, one can deduce that a cowpox inoculation can protect against smallpox without even seeing the virus, because milkmaids were protected from smallpox.
