As you can see, it doesn't involve testing people 8 or 9 times a week:

Testing is available to any member of the UCSF community with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who may have been exposed to the virus while working or learning on-site. Employees seeking a COVID-19 test should contact Occupational Health Services (OHS) at 415-514-7328 or email ohs@ucsf.edu. Students should contact UCSF Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) at 415-476-8736 or send a secure message to the student health nurse.

Also, some asymptomatic people can be randomly tested

UCSF Occupational Health Services (OHS) has launched the COVID-19 random Asymptomatic Testing Program (ATP) program to help monitor and prevent the spread of COVID-19 at UCSF. Each week, a randomly selected group of faculty, staff and students who work or learn on-site will receive an email inviting them to register for voluntary asymptomatic testing by filling out a Qualtrics survey. Volunteers who enroll will receive a follow-up call from OHS to schedule a time to submit a self-administered nasal swab for testing at one of UCSF’s on-site screening locations at the Mission Bay, Parnassus Heights, or Mount Zion campuses. Random ATP supplements the universal testing already in place for on-site workers and learners who have COVID-19 symptoms or may have been exposed to the virus on site.

But the majority of the community are only tested if symptomatic.

Stanford students, faculty and staff can be tested pretty much as often as they want. I don't think the Stanford community is the issue, more the county as a whole.

Most Stanford students aren't allowed back on campus, which is my point.  The energy and resources should be dedicated to making that possible.

Santa Clara County won't allow it. My son has been at Santa Clara. They have had absolute minimum students on campus since March and no in-person classes. We are pulling him out after this quarter until they return to in-person classes - he's had three quarters of online from home and is done with that. Santa Clara had planned to have about 50% of students on campus but very limited in-person classes. I'm guessing that those plans are being scrapped with their return to purple tier. Expect Stanford to be forced to do the same.
