The championship game of the Stanford Invitational if I recall correctly. Maples was sold out as everyone wanted to watch UNC's junior phenom Michael Jordan. He scored 4 points and fouled out. The Tar Heels did not need him. They also had Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith and won 88-75. It was still thrilling to feel the energy in Maples from a full house.I was there, Jerry Hobbie and mock TD signals and all.
Same. Never had the sense Stanford had a chance in that one. Hope (and dare I say it, expect?) to NOT have that same feeling today. We'll see.
P.S. On alternate timeline, my #1 remains that Emeka Okafor resists BS pressure from Calhoun and signs with Stanford after Collins scholarship is formally available . . . and Stanford goes on to win 2 NCAA titles (the latter would have been a given had Okafor worn Cardinal uni). That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!
