If so, then fine. But no one even asks the question.
Actually, I am sure lots of people have asked the question; it is just a very difficult and tricky one to answer. Since we can't do randomized, placebo controlled trials of sports versus no sports to see whether engaging in sports leads to hospitalization, you have to tease the answer out from a lot of data. Maybe the best way would be contact tracing, but we suck at it, and, as I pointed out in another post, people aren't answering.
My guess is that playing college and pro sports are probably ok, but there is risk of spread in all the other activities: traveling to and from the event (even if it is in a chartered jet), staying at a hotel in a city different than your own, etc. I doubt what you are asking for (proof one way or another) can be done in the middle of a pandemic, so we are going to have to make educated guesses.

That's not how it works. The players need to train (we know that's not going well). The players need to have people train them, ask Coach Saban about that. The players need support staff when they are in the stadium, I believe some folks in Philly have thoughts on the safety of those efforts after the Marlins came to town. There is just so much beyond the actual activity with ample examples of spread even in the relatively small sample size.
The sport also consumes a lot of health care resources. They are paying for those resources, but it is still a bad look for a government to allow those activities to consume resources that are in relatively short supply.
In the end football, bars, casinos and everything else should be stopped in an attempt to keep schools open.
FWIW - It probably won't be enough. LA county is on fire right now. Cases are out of control, so look for a lot more at the state level to be closed or suspended soon. Everyone will say, "Why us" or "Why our industry". Ultimately when a novel pandemic is out of control you just have to shutdown all non-essential stuff ASAP in the hopes of keeping essential stuff open.
Football? Non-essential. It really is that easy.
