My instinct tells me that it would be devastating to all the sports besides football if the leading revenue generator--such as it is--were governed separately than all the non revenue sports. Obligations to subsidize the rest of athletics would certainly be lessened, and decisions would be made in the best interests of football and not necessarily in the best interests of athletics in general.
I also am inclined to think that it would be extremely bad for Stanford in particular, since independent governance of football would probably lead to ruination of the last vestiges of the amateur student-athlete model, which has been far more meaningful at Stanford than at many other institutions.
Arne Duncan was my least favorite Obama cabinet official, and now I can add another strike against him.
I think it is probably only a matter of time before this game is transmogrified to a degree that I can no longer enjoy it or support it. Stanford was the sole reason I have hung on as a football fan as long as I have, but these are ominous signs.
