Probably a good thing that they will not be playing in Pasadena, given how dire the situation is. But still, the message that the NCAA is sending is beyond atrocious. Public health rules don't apply to college football, because reasons.

Disagree completely. The protocols the NCAA has put in place seem to be relatively successful. They would have been okay, especially as the strains they would have put on hospitals would have been outside of California 14+ days later. Grandstanding by the powers that be. . .
The study I'm looking forward to, is how many players get Covid now that their season is over and they're not subject to rigid protocols. My guess that the infection rate of players will increase significantly. 25%? 50% More? Care to make a guess?
Methinks playing sports ingrains a sense of responsibility that otherwise wouldn't be there. Interesting to see what happens.
Your first conclusion of no impact on local hospitals and families is based on a fantasy of hoping that sports won't have negative consequences. Those coming into an area for a bowl game don't arrive via a bubble and don't stay in any magical bubble. They all have varying levels of contact with people and businesses in the area. The fans would have the most contact, while the players would have the least. The arriving fans could easily, and would likely, infect others in the area, some of whom would end up in hospitals and ICUs. Preventing fans from gathering is not grandstanding, its good policy. Fans gathering aren't needed for the players to compete in the game. Your speculation about the high infection rates after athletes isn't really relevant because after all athletes end their seasons they will have to return to their more regular routines and I don't think you are proposing that they all keep playing indefinitely. Regardless of all the speculation, I hope everyone involved in current competition stays safe and everyone has a happy and safe holiday.
Cheers,
