Probably a good thing that they will not be playing in Pasadena, given how dire the situation is. But still, the message that the NCAA is sending is beyond atrocious. Public health rules don't apply to college football, because reasons.

Movies, tv shows and commercials are still being produced and filmed. The Gov deemed them essential. Loved the imagery of an onset catering tent with its lavish offerings next door to a restaurant that was shuttered. . . .
I'm not defending the governor's decisions, which have not helped the matter. Filming should not be considered an essential activity and should have been paused for a few weeks. However, the governor making decisions I don't agree with is not a justification for ignoring or sidestepping public health orders.
Honestly, had the NCAA just said, "Given the severity of COVID-19 situation in Southern California we would like to do our part to prevent further burden on the LA area and are moving the National Semifinal", it would have been colossally disingenuous and hypocritical, but at least it would have acknowledged that public health orders are at least nominally important to follow. Instead the message is "if you don't like the restrictions in one jurisdiction, it is totally fine to go to another jurisdiction with looser restrictions". It's an awful message, and it is why so many of us are sick and tired of following the rules; we view it as hopeless, and we see that if you are influential enough, the rules don't apply to you (and yes, the Governor hosting a party at the French Laundry absolutely fits with that).
