ESPN's Andrea Adelson makes some good points in an article about the failure of the CFP program.

Because there is so much emphasis placed on strength of schedule, body of work, ranked wins and (to a much lesser extent) championships, it becomes unattainable for a large number of teams to even think about the top four. The only way any possible expansion fixes the issues is if there are guaranteed spots for each Power 5 champion plus the highest-ranked Group of 5 team. But in years such as this, where unranked Oregon upsets previously undefeated USC, that format would also get blasted.

I disagree with the last sentence.  I believe that such a system would be far better than the current one.  There should be 8 teams in the playoff.  The eight should consist of the five Power 5 conference champions, the top two highest ranked Group of 5 teams, and the 8th team would be the highest ranked team not already in.  Once the eight teams are established, seed them based on ranking.  Losing your CCG should cost you a spot in the playoff unless you're ranked high enough to snag that 8th spot.  

With such a system, the eight teams this season would have been Alabama, Clemson, tOSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, and ND.  That would be an exciting 3 weekend playoff with plenty of opportunity to root for an underdog.  The end result would most likely be Alabama vs Clemson in the final, but at least other teams would have a shot.
