As mentioned, I wasn't planning to watch Stanford play UCLA.  I would have forgotten about it, but for CBS rolling the score on the SEC CG. In a commercial break, I turned on ESPN and saw Stanford was trailing by 7.  I then saw the Davis Mills pick 6 that made it 34-20.  I immediately had flashbacks to at USC in 2011, namely because I re-watched that game on YouTube last week.

So out of curiosity, I continued watching, to see how Mills would respond.  I saw the TD drive, but figured that's as far as it would go, so I tuned back to Alabama-Florida. In a commercial break, I flipped back to ESPN, and right when I did, UCLA fumbled and Stanford recovered. That certainly made things interesting, so of course I watched from there, flipping back to CBS and ESPN to keep tabs on both games.

Watching Stanford's last four TD drives, and considering they led 20-3, it's hard to believe UCLA ever stopped Stanford in the game. Then again, I can see how the same thing could be said about Stanford ever stopping UCLA in the first half.  

Anyway, I just think everyone needs to appreciate Thomas Schaffer. Not a great player by any means, but someone who clearly worked hard to get big and strong enough to play a crucial role for Stanford, especially in 2020. He's an example of a guy who loved football and wanted to play it badly, after growing up in Europe. Stanford needs to recruit more guys like him, who want to make themselves into football players by sheer force of will and commitment, at least as much if not more than they want the Stanford degree. I too saw and heard Schaffer screaming in pain on the final play and was hoping it wasn't a really bad injury. Never a great time to get hurt, but last play of the last game you will play?  Ugh.

You nailed it. We don't seem to have as many guys who are as passionate about the game as we used to. Gotta love what Thomas brought this year - he was hungry and he ate!

Austria has the what is considered the 2nd best American Football league in Europe.  Germany is considered to have the best.  I wonder how we found him and whether there is any kind of scouting service that covers the better European leagues?  Europe is a good source of players in some other sports.
