Both of the following statements are true:

1) Coaches are human and are subject to the same cognitive biases that anyone else is; they make mistakes too.
2) As a fan, I am privy to a fraction of the info the coaches have (and also, I have a fraction of the experience coaching a basketball team, if that) that the coaches do.

That is why I generally offer broad deference to the coaching staff on most questions, particularly staffs that have shown time and again that they are among the best in the business.  I agree the Prechtel situation is a bit curious, and I hope that this is a case of me not having all the info than the coaches not handling the situation well.
