I think the issue is that, and this has been decades in the making, college football has gone from a game you play with your friends that oh by the way pays for your college to a profit-maximizing business that doesn't pay its players.

My father in law told me that when he played basketball for Stanford in the 1950s that, even then, there was no time for anything but school and work.  And, five decades later, Stanford's volleyball coaches told my son that a 40 hour week commitment was expected for the sport.
