BC Frankly, this debate is tiresome and repetitive. I’m interested in basketball. Santa Clara County, among all the counties in the US so far as I know, has chosen its ban on sports approach. There approach hasn’t solved the Covids problem but maybe people in Santa .Clara County are better off than they were before. We can’t know now so I for one am tired of speculating. And yes, I do believe playing college basketball confers more benefit on the players, the schools and the fans than the unknown benefit of cancelling a season. That’s not science, that’s opinion and common sense. 

But Let’s talk basketball here. Apologies if I come across as insensitive or disrespectful; I’m not. We all have our views and they deserve to be heard. Just maybe not here.  I for one am a simple basketball fan whio is fed up with arguments that can’t be resolved .

This seems as good a spot for a mini-rant of 5 things that SUCK from my vantage point in Palo Alto, CA:

1.  Last night, on SportsCenter, the #1 play in Top 10 was from a high school girls’ basketball game . . . that had fans in stands!  And here, no school, no sports, no fans, no nothing.

2.  Per a grad school buddy, a Chicagoan who rented a place in South Beach for a month to get some warm and sun, they are allowing dining outdoors . . . and indoors.  Here, neither.

3.  Everywhere else in the country, afaik, college teams are allowed to practice and play on their home courts.  Here, no dice.

4.  Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Woodside have very low Covid numbers, and virtually all (all but 2 according to a family doctor a few days ago) of the Covid patients at Stanford hospital are transfers from other areas – yet the lockdown here is as strict (if not stricter) than anywhere else.

5.  I don’t follow other states (or counties) all that closely; however, my impression is California is one of the strictest states in terms of lockdowns across the board (and has been pretty much from the jump).  And seemingly California is the worst Covid place in the world right now.  WTH is going on?!?  I’m tired of closure restrictions for restrictions’ sake (SCC sports one is perfect example); and I’m really pissed at people who don’t take basic and reasonable precautions, which is fueling CA’s $hitty numbers.

Oh, and CA is doing a bang up job on the vaccination front, too . . . NOT!  (The guy from Chicago said he played golf with two guys in Florida - both in their 60s and in decent health - both have been vaccinated (or at least one of the shots)).  Here, my 97 year old mom living in Assisted Living was advised they would have first shots in December . . . now, no visibility into when that might actually occur.  AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

Teejers, I never expected you to play the setup guy. 
I know you know that California and SCC have been and are safer than most of the country. 

So I believe you are just venting.  We are all frustrated.

True, California has $hitty numbers. Unfortunately, California is still better than other US states with larger population centers.
SCC has more than a 1/3 FEWER COVID deaths per capita than California.  California has more than 1/3 FEWER COVID deaths per capita than the US.

If California were the same average as the rest of the US (118/100K), there would be nearly 18,000 more deaths in California (5% of all US deaths to date).

Check out California against the other states with major cities in terms of COVID deaths per 100K.

The states for the 10 largest US cities are NY (304 NYC, 123), CA (73), IL(151), TX (102), AZ (137), PA(138), TX, CA, TX, CA
[and, since you mention FL, it's 106]
The US average is 111, so California has a third fewer deaths.   
(Comparing to Europe: Germany(50), UK(121), FR (101), IT (130) )
SCC is at 47 COVID deaths per 100K.

You quote examples that I find are great examples of how badly other areas are doing.  Take your Florida vaccine example.  How the heck is it better  that two healthy guys in their 60s have been vaccinated.  (If they're doctors, that's expected and proper, so I assume they aren't.)  Per the CDC, Florida has vaccinated under 403K people.  There are at least 500K health care workers (Based on CA numbers, I expect it is 1M).  The census indicates 4.48M people age 65+. (About 3.17M 70+; 600K 85+)  Ask yourself, how did these 2 guys jump in front of 3.6M people that deserve the shot more?

I do agree that California and SCC have done very poorly in getting shots into LTCF residents.  You may want to contact the health department and try to get her a vaccination independently of her living facility.

I suggest further discussion to happen in a similar board that I set up this past week.  I hoped to give it a bit more try out, but I'll open it now.
