Yes, there is always an excuse.  In his fifth season at Stanford, Haase has a sub-500 conference record, no NCAA tournament appearances, and one NIT second round (probably would have been two after last year, and he will probably get a third this year).

At some point, you have to win and make the tournament.

His record five years in is just about indistinguishable from Dawkins' (if we win the NIT, it will be uncanny).
