My takeaways from this game:
1) the minutes played in a close game against top competition shows exactly who Tara believes are our best players. Williams, Brink, Lexie, and Jones essentially played the whole game. Not much of a rotation at all. Wilson, Jump, and Lacie split a position. Belibi played 4 minutes. Our bench had 3 points.
2) Early in the season we thought Williams went through a slump or two. No longer. She was 8/15 today for 20 points. And many of those shots were difficult floaters coming at moments when no one else seemed to be able to get a quality shot off. I really, really hate to think of the team without her next year.
3) Despite her great offense, Williams had 5 turnovers and Jones had 6. If either one of them had been able to hold onto the ball better, the game would not have been so close. Jones in particular has had turnover issues both last year and this year. She leads the team in turnovers. Some of it is her aggressive passes inside to teammates, but not all of it. Today she had several unforced errors. I am not sure why this is.
4) Offensively, Oregon is probably the only other team in the Pac 12 like us--a multiheaded monster with multiple players who can shoot well. Mikesell had not been doing so well of late but she led them tonight. I'd rather not play them again since they are tough to scout. Better to play an Arizona in the tournament which might technically be a better team but is more predictable. But we have Arizona once more in the regular season first.
