There is no rule that says that a fifth year player must be enrolled in a graduate program to stay at Stanford. Obviously, being able to leave with a co-terminal degree is a big advantage, but it is not a requirement for continued enrollment. Williams could decide to stay at Stanford, take a relatively light courseload for fun (or get a second major) and graduate with her BA or BS in Science Technology and Society after winter quarter 2022 without ever applying for grad school.
Of course, she could also decide to see if she will be drafted into the WNBA (she's the last pick in the first round in this WNBA mock draft: https://wbasketballblog.com/2021/01/13/2...rsion-1-0/) or she could decide to pursue a graduate degree at another school, in which case being admitted to a grad program at Stanford might be important for keeping her.
