a friend had recently watched Shimp practice and said he was just striping it. golf can be a very fickle mistress...
Even as an avid golfer, I can watch these guys practice and most of them just stripe it on the range. It's different when you walk 18 with a group and see them face a wide variety of shots and make the occasional mistake. I've seen a freshman shoot 68 at Stanford and seen a senior who qualified for the US Open shoot 78.
Since they re-did the bunkers at Stanford in 2017-18, it's become a much tougher test for college golfers. Before then, most college players (men and women) would just bomb tee shots over the bunkers and half the field would finish under par. Since then, about 1/4 of the field finishes under par. If you're in the area, come tee it up. The course is in as good a shape as I've ever seen it in the 30+ years I've been playing it.
