Choy wins her third 6-2 and its 6-0 Stanford as Gordon forces a second-set tiebreaker!
Nayar is a legitimately good player, so I’m not the least bit bothered that Gordon is getting tested here (I’d be a lot happier if she pulled it out, of course).
But Colorado, like a lot of teams, can’t match our depth. They might have one or two really good players, but we’re usually deeper than just about any team in the country. This is the Stanford recipe—get wins on the back three courts and find that fourth win either in doubles or on one of the top three courts.
Also: it is super stupid to only have game-level live scoring and no live video. To not be able to follow along with every live-or-die point in a tiebreaker is *checks notes* yep, super stupid.
Also, Michaela hasn’t had a test yet this season. She needed a match like this.
Michaela apparently pulls out the tiebreak win! (I say apparently because the scoreboard shows her winning the tiebreak 8-7, which isn’t a thing.)
But if so, that’s great fight and great finishing all around.
Really hard to figure how this lineup beat Cal, but it probably comes down to (1) Cal has been very inconsistent for the past few years, and (2) Colorado has a really, really good coach and is squeezing every last drop of performance out of her roster. We also probably benefited from a bit of an emotional letdown on CU’s part after such a program-defining win on Friday.
