81alum, I am looking forward to hopefully 6 game previews from you over the next few weeks.
A quick look at Utah Valley, Cal Baptist won their conference tournament, but the school is still transitioning to D1 and not eligible yet for postseason play, so the conference decided beforehand to award the conference bid to the 2nd place team which was Utah Valley.
A quick run through their stats shows opportunities we can exploit: they turn the ball over 16 times a game and has a negative turnover margin and they only average 63 ppg.
They look evenly balanced scoring wise with 4 players averaging at least 9 ppg. Their leading scorer Josie Williams is their center at 6'5", so it will be good practice for Brink to guard her inside and work on effectively defending a scoring post without fouling.
They have a couple of players shooting nearly 40% from long range, but the two players who have attempted the most 3 pointers on their team are landing them at a less threatening 30% and 22% clip.
I am expecting no issues with them; as this should be our only straightforward game probably. Even our potential Round of 32 opponent, Oklahoma State will pose issues, with Natasha Mack, who was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
