Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall hearing much about UCLA having a short bench from the announcers. I guess they were talking too much about someone's birthday.
Texas actually played fewer players (7 players played, and only 6 attempted a shot), so the "short bench" thing affected both teams. UCLA has played the whole season shorthanded.

So the game, at 41 fouls called, was possibly just 5 fouls short of playing 5 (incl. hurt Horvat who had just 2 minutes) on 4 (incl. Ortiz who had just 2 minutes) with no benches? (2 players on UCLA had 4 fouls & 1 fouled out; 3 players on Texas had 4 fouls)
I admit to skipping forward during the game, but I didn't hear them making a big deal of the specter of playing short-handed. (I did hear one mention of the Australians(?) freshmen that couldn't get to the US).
