At the start of this season, Tara had 1094 wins while Geno had 1092 wins.
At this point, Stanford and UConn will be playing in the Elite Eight.
With her team at 28-2 so far, Tara now has 1122 wins.  (Worst possible outcome: 28-3;  Best: 31-2)
With his team at 27-1 so far, Geno now has 1119 wins.  (Worst possible outcome: 27-2;  Best: 30-1)

If Stanford were to lose its next game and UConn wins the remaining 3 games (Elite Eight, Semi-Finals, Finals), then the two coaches would have the same number of wins.  So, even in the worst case, Geno can not pass Tara this year.

If Stanford were to win its next game, Tara will retain a lead into the next season.   Best case is that she has 6 more wins than Geno.

I heard some references about how tough the year was on Tara that made me think she could decide to leave on a high note.    

I also saw an interview of Geno about his COVID illness.  He said repeatedly that with COVID, he felt the same each day when he got up as he did every other day.  I felt it was obvious that he was AVOIDING saying he felt good when he got up.

I think Geno would be loathe to step down a few games short of Tara.  If he were to do so, I think he'd have to have very little choice. 

We've all heard how competitive Tara is.  I could imagine she might rather go out on top versus maybe slipping into 2nd place.

In the unlikely but possible case that the two coaches would be tied at the end of the season, that would be a scenario in which I could imagine both coaches retire.  I hope that doesn't happen!


(Geno wasn't on the bench for two games, but people give him credit for those games.  It's not the same as missing a whole year.
I can't remember Tara not being on the bench, except of course for the year she took off for the Olympics (for which she gets no credit for Stanford wins).)
