Who decided it was a good idea to add squash and synchronized swimming?  I know field hockey and fencing have been around for a long time, but almost no colleges on the west coast compete in these sports.

Entering its 37th year of organized competition, the Stanford synchronized swimming team is one of the university’s most successful athletic programs. Stanford has won eight collegiate national titles, including six of the last 12, among its 36 top-five finishes.

So, that's about 1983.  The earliest date at GoStanford.com for field hockey is  1975.  For fencing, 1990.  For squash, 2004.
