I hope the alumni group asks the BOT straight up if this is at least some of their reasoning, and then ask whether they have considered expanding the class size by the 30 or so students it would take to make up the difference.
I would also ask them if they have analyzed the income and racial mix of the students who are recruited and/or join these programs as walk ons, and how that compares to the student body as a whole.
Make them show their math. I doubt any straight answers would be given, but perhaps the university is going off some assumptions that aren't necessarily true, even if they seem truthy. I bet legacy admits are more white/wealthy than the average recruited athlete in these sports but Stanford probably would like to keep that issue separate.
