So, Stanford baseball has to cancel this week due to COVID problems. I have no inside knowledge, but the lack of information suggests that some number of players have an infection while others may have to miss games because they were potentially exposed.
Just to refresh people's memory, those that have an infection can potentially play after 10 days (if all goes well). Those that were exposed may be back in (IIRC) 10 days as well, with negative tests. It used to be 2 weeks for those exposed, but I think the NCAA reduced to 10 days. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The CDC allows for vaccinations once an infected person is out of the acute phase of the illness. The CDC recommends that those who have a known exposure wait until the end of their quarantine period.
I would think that the players should try for one of the mRNA vaccines, as those have been shown to have an 80% effectiveness (against asymptomatic or symptomatic COVID) after 2 weeks after the first shot (assuming the 2nd shot happens on schedule). The Janssen vaccine is 67% effective (against symptomatic COVID) after 2 weeks after the (only) shot. (Of course, today the only vaccines given are mRNA vaccines.)
There is a time element on the reduced chance of someone that had COVID from being reinfected, but a Danish study put the effectiveness of previously having COVID at 80% against getting it again.
(Note that a rough approximation would be that the effectiveness should be about the same whether measured against just symptomatic, or against both asymptomatic & symptomatic COVID. FYI, the CDC study found 87% of those found with COVID with every-week PCR test had traditional COVID symptoms. They didn't report the asymptomatic percentages separately for those vaccinated or not.)
So, someone getting the shot today, would have reduced chances of getting COVID beginning around May 4. That improves the team's chances of playing and having all or most players healthy for that final stretch of games plus the tourney. Those that went into quarantine today may get the vaccine in 10 days, putting their date at May 14.
