Holds all the Oregon passing records. Challenge is that he's 6' 0" (barely) and 182 pounds.
He's 196 pounds and was Oregon's Player of the Year over Sam Noyer (Colorado) when Noyer was a senior and Tawa a sophomore. He was Oregon's Player of the Year as a junior over Justin Herbert (Oregon; Chargers) when Herbert was a senior and Tawa a junior. He throws 90+, is cat quick and runs in the 4.5s. The only thing not to like is he doesn't fit Shaw's mold size wise.
Tawa won't do it anyway, but it's fun to speculate.
The other thing possibly not to like is that he had zero football offers in high school. Why was that? Can't be size; there were three 4* dual-threat QBs who were 6' or shorter in his class (and three more 3* dual-threat QBs 6' or shorter that signed with P5 programs).
On "doesn't fit the mold size-wise," 2 of our 2022 QB offers are 6'1" and 6'2".
That's actually easily explained. When Tawa committed to the baseball program, early in November, 2014, he was a 15-year-old sophomore still in his first year playing varsity football and not yet considered a prospect. Three weeks later, he won the first of three straight Gatorade POY awards in football.
Tawa's first love was baseball, the scholarship was significant (greater than 75%) and Stanford was his dream school. He was COMMITTED. Not committed until there was a better offer. Committed. The family instructed his football head coach, former NFL QB and Falcons QB coach Chris Miller, to tell anyone inquiring that Tawa was not considering college football offers. As a result, at no time did he ever talk to any college football coach on the subject of recruiting. It is true that he received no Division I offer. He also received no Division II offer. None at the DIII, NAIA or JuCo levels, either. Committed meant committed. He stated publicly that if he played football, it would only be for the Card and that he would be a baseball first player.
