I don't know what night you mean but Grier and Rafer Johnson were not professional bodyguards and were partially responsible for RFK's assassination. It wasn't until George Wallace was shot that the president ordered SS on all major candidates prior to the nominating conventions.

It's a stretch to put responsibility on Grier and Johnson. Kennedy did have a professional bodyguard (Bill Barry) who was an ex-FBI agent, presumably responsible for securing the areas that Kennedy was walking through. Unfortunately, Barry was unarmed (presumably on Kennedy's orders) and as they walked through the kitchen Ethel Kennedy found herself panicked as she was engulfed by supporters, so Kennedy directed Barry to go help her; Kennedy was shot while Barry attended to his wife. Grier and Johnson were volunteer bodyguards but not in charge of security. Immediately after the assassination Congress passed a law authorizing the secret service to provide protection for presidential and vice presidential candidates. 

There were 18 secret service agents present when George Wallace was shot in Maryland in 1972. Crowds has been so hostile that the secret service had recommended that Wallace cancel open events and had increased the numbers of agents on his protective detail, but were still unable to prevent what happened.
