Laurens Pierce was often closer to Wallace than his agents. That's why Pierce was able to have a shot (for CBS News) of the shooting from close range. To his credit he had an over the shoulder shot of the assassin and the actual shot and then calmly followed Wallace to the ground and tilted back to capture a few frames of Arthur Bremner being restrained. I think that the SS guys may have been outliers assigned to the former governor as were many during the '72 campaign. I talked with guys from various agencies assigned because there were many Democrat candidates and not enough SS staffers to cover everybody. McGovern and Humphrey had the best agents IMO.

My RFK reference point was my father who had extensively covered Ike, LBJ and Goldwater and who knew good security from mediocre security. Of course nobody is invulnerable (JFK, Reagan). It's a tough job.
