After the ball hit Tony Kubek in the throat Hal Smith hit a three run homer to I believe tie the score late in the game and setting up Maz.

There were some poignant articles written about Hal Smith a few years back after he died. His home run actually gave the Pirates the lead; the Yankees tied it up before Mazeroski settled things in the bottom of the inning. So if the Pirates relievers had held the lead then Hal Smith would have become some sort of Pittsburgh icon, but instead he was mostly forgotten. Similar to Dave Henderson in the 1986 World Series; delivering the game winning home run to give the Red Sox their first championship in 68 years (after his famous homer off Donnie Moore in the ALCS) would have made him a Boston icon forever one would think, but of course the Mets crazy comeback in the bottom of the tenth wiped out the memories of Henderson's shot off of Aguilera in the top of the inning.
