That's always been the narrative, but he won his next two starts after the ASG despite pain in his shoulder, went 1-5 the rest of the season and then underwent rotator cuff surgery which caused him to miss most of the 1984 season, at which point he indeed was never the same, as is common with pitchers who undergo that surgery (particularly back in those days.)
