My grandfather (went to Cal) was a tough kid who fought in the streets every day in both North Beach and the Sunset.  He had some interesting stories.  One was that he was out of control and his father wanted to take the starch out of him, so he allowed him to lie about his age and fight professionally when he was 15/16 in 1920.  He fought as a lightweight and lost all three bouts.
