Frank Jobe, the Dodgers orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery, gave it a 1 in 100 chance of succeeding. 164 out of John’s 288 wins came after the surgery. Today, close to 90% achieve a full recovery, though about 35% of pitchers never get back to the major leagues.
