While I recognize that Luigi is his given name, I am wondering what people think they are accomplishing by using it rather than the name he goes by.

well back in junior high school when we'd find out someone's given name that they had been "hiding" by using a nickname we'd often take great joy in calling them by their given name for a few weeks as it seemed to annoy them no end...of course back then finding this out when the teacher first called role in the class was particularly amusing...
