I took a criminal justice class in 1982 in which I toured San Quentin. Not a pleasant experience. 21 years before that, my dad's softball team played a game against the Soledad state prison team. Before the game, Dad and his teammates toured the prison, and Dad locked eyes with one of the inmates -- they had been former high school classmates in the late 1950s, and as a teenager, the inmate regularly burgled homes and predictably wound up in prison. During the game, Dad hit a ball to the fence, and as he was rounding first, the Soledad first baseman growled some unprintable threats at him. Dad said it was the longest single he'd ever hit in his life. Separately, in the late innings, the Soledad centerfielder made a break for it and started to scale the fence. One of the prison guards shot him, and left him hanging on the fence for the rest of the game. Crazy.
