The statement was that Stanford has won more medals than South Korea. But if South Korea wins a medal in water polo it's counted as one medal, whereas if a there were four Stanford players on the team it would count as four medals in Stanford's accounting; it's apples and oranges.

If the US wins the gold medal in women's soccer this year it would count as one gold medal for the US, but Stanford would count it as five gold medals for the school. You couldn't honestly say that "if Stanford were a country it would rank ahead of the US in women's soccer goal medals" by a 5-1 margin because you are counting two different things. Apples-to-apples would mean that the US would claim 22 gold medals in women's soccer.
