The shittier our world gets, the less I'm bothered by these types of stories. Greg Clark may have died "too soon" and it might have been as a result of his football playing (and practicing), but we all have to die of something, some time. If someone dies young as a result of doing what they wanted and wouldn't trade it for anything else, they lived a more fulfilled life than some who lived much longer. Who am I to judge?

The football enterprise has to worry about whether other people are as forgiving as me on this issue, so has taken many steps to lessen the numbers of collisions a player experiences in the game since Clark played. still, it's frustrating there are no known markers for who is more susceptible to brain damage by cumulative hits than others. It leaves everyone in a situation they are rolling the dice to play contact sports like football, but we all make decisions to make bets or take risks with our lives in the quest for happiness and fulfillment all the time. Most of those choices don't end up in early death or misery, but others don't take any known risks only to suffer terrible life outcomes anyway too.

Why?  Clearly, you disagree with something I said. I'd like to know what, specifically.

The thread was about the sad death of a young former Stanford football player. You turned it in to something about you and your pessimistic world view. But I should have kept my thoughts to myself.

Whenever I say something that touches on personal matters, I explain where I come from so people understand.

My point for making the post was to preemptively blunt any arguments about football being unsafe to play, etc., that people on this board have a proclivity to make when we learn football players die younger than might otherwise be expected.  I didn't want to see Clark's death used as a justification to attack playing football.

Last night I just learned a friend's neighbor was killed in the VTA shooting and the shooter went to my High School. My dad's barber's daughter was killed by the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay shooter. One of my best friends died of brain cancer when he was 37.  Another friend had a cousin killed in a mass shooting in CT. Lots of people die too young even without taking risks, so now you understand more about what I posted and why.

Im sorry.  All that is tragic.  But this thread was about Greg Clark.
