Membership in the Association of American Universities (64 US members, 2 Canadian) is a mark of distinction that helps identify peer universities.
In the PAC 12 (if I counted correctly), only OSU, ASU, and WSU are not members. In the BIG, only Nebraska is not a member.
Neither Baylor, Texas Tech, nor TCU are members. An issue would be whether the conference wanted to remain one of similar schools or not.
Funny, the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri previously doubled the number of schools that are members of the AAU in the SEC. Only Vanderbilt and Florida were members before A&M and Missouri joined. The addition of UT will increase their number to 5 (of 16).
