I think anyone who has followed volleyball and Stanford now know who BaseballJunkie is. Congrats on Tim's great career on the Farm. And i hope your new venture works out - the community is not the same with your voice covering all the players and teams.
As for when a recruit should announce, it really depends on the recruit and his/her comfortableness with ambiguity. Because the decision ultimately lies with the admissions office, it is out of your hands, no matter how stellar your academics are. I remember when Cynthia Barboza committed super early as a junior (well early for early 2000s). When I asked Corlett about it, she said it was a no-brainer that Barboza was going to be admitted because of her grades. I do remember a soccer player who had committed to Stanford and had written a blog about it... and then it turns out she got rejected and ended up going to another local school. Those type of scenarios would scare me about committing early... but again, it all depends on the person, their grades, and how they deal with the unknown.
