I thought Tafoya's question was strange, and Ledecky seemed surprised by it, too. She's said before she was targeting 2024, so the suggestion that she was weighing retirement after Tokyo seemed pretty out-of-the-blue to me. She's just 24, for goodness' sake!

Ledecky had a great race and went about a second lower than her best time coming in this year, while Titmus's slow prelim swim was clearly an energy-conserving move, because she shaved over a second and a half off her best time coming in, and she had a great last 50 to try and close the gap, but it was just too big. 

The Worlds the next couple years and the 2024 Olympics are going to be fascinating in how Ledecky trains now that she's outside a college environment, what program Ledecky chooses to train for and race, and how much more Titmus (who is only 20) can improve. If Ledecky wants to hang with her in the 400, she's going to have to shave a couple of seconds off, and same thing if she wants to keep holding her off in the 800. That margin in the 1500 keeps getting smaller, too, so I'm eager to see how Ledecky responds to that challenge.
