Shaw occupies an endowed chair. I have no idea what the terms of the endowment are, others on this board may know much more. However, the large payout may have to do with the endowment producing lots of income that can only be used to pay the head coach. Naturally, the people who manage the endowment must ensure adequate value to continue it forward, but beyond that point it may be that they de facto have to spend the income on the head coach.
From Muir's point of view, if he can't use the money for other purposes, giving it to Shaw is a very good strategy. Imagine the howl if Shaw did leave on his watch. It may be (probably is) that Shaw wouldn't quit if he made "only 4 million" a year, BUT if it really costs Muir nothing to pay him more, why not do so?
