I mean, the bottom line is that Stanford isn't actually a country, so while the whole thing is a bit silly, accusations of misinformation are a bit much. I imagine Stanford does similar things with stuff like "Nobel Prize Winners", patents granted, etc, just as you often hear stuff like "If California were a country, it's GDP would rank 5th in the world, ahead of India but behind Germany".
There is a lot of kvetching over what is, in essence, just a silly brag.
