Nobody has responded to my request for any information about the terms of the endowed chair that Shaw occupies. It may well be that there is no down side to paying him that money if the endowment income is only available to pay the occupant of the chair. In fact, it may be required for all I know. The mysterious one time payment could be asset sale proceeds. I don't think "they" would let Muir spend that much money unless it couldn't go elsewhere.
