Obviously more universities makes it less likely to find common ground, but this alliance ultimately is only about a very narrow set of issues, regardless of the P.R. spin being put out now. A conference needs to be aligned on every issue and dozens of sports, the Pac-12/Big-X/ACC alliance is about football (and possibly but to a much lesser extent men's basketball) and really only about maximizing television revenue. So the complexity of additional players is mitigated by the reduction of agenda items.

I didn't provide an estimate regarding the chances of "screwing it up" so I'm not sure how you determined that I am underestimating, but I do think the chances of the Pac-12 maximizing its broadcast revenue potential definitely goes up as part of an agreement like this, details pending.
