I played towards the end of the ripe period of SF major leaguers. The best were No Neck and Frank Bertaina. Many MLB players were opponents in college. Messersmith, Bowa, Spaceman, Bob Boone among them.

At SI in our 1963 AAA championship season we gave Wally Bunker one of his two HS losses. A year later he won 19 games for the Orioles. There used to be a weekly page in the Chronicle devoted to all the semi pro games in the Bay Area in the coming week. Scores of teams, plenty of diamonds. The City Winter League was like the Cape Cod League now. Alas City baseball now sucks.

Kai Moody, Washington HS ‘17, may be the only current homegrown MLB prospect. He’s a middle infielder at CSUN and made the 2021 All Big West first team. https://gomatadors.com/sports/baseball/r...moody/5375
