The crazy thing is that the 1999 team that went to the Rose Bowl lost disastrously to Texas, while the 2000 team that went 5-6 beat Texas team that was (as you noted) ranked #5 at the time, and ended up ranked #12. The team went 9-3, with losses to Oklahoma and two Pac-10 teams (Stanford, and Oregon in the Holiday Bowl).
