Hey Mick did you notice the year 1938 in my question? The Boston Braves moved after the ‘36 season. The Braves became the Washington Redskins. The Boston Patriots were founded as an original AFL team with the first season in 1960.

On further review I found four Broncs... Ginny, Coughlan, Wolff and Clarke... no first names.

At a glance I recognized four names... Wyatt (Tennessee, Bowden?) Goldberg (Pitt, Marshall?) Luckman (Columbia, Sid) O’Brien (TCU, Davey).

That was the 1939 draft, and there were actually 5 Broncos drafted. Coached by Buck Shaw, one of the innovators of the 4-3 defense, at least two of the Broncos were from San Francisco and allowed just one TD all season:

1. Alvord Wolff (DT - All America), Mission High in SF, 220 pounds.  3rd round.
2. Jerry Ginney (OG), Lowell HS, 5'10", 217 pounds.  6th round.
3. Jim Coughlan (E), 12th round
4. Russ Clarke (G), 15th round
5, Bill Gunther (E), 22nd round., 195 pounds. (199th pick, penultimate pick before Mr. Irrelevant).
