USF, 1951 season. Cal and Stanford played USF in 1950 (both USF losses, BTW), both refused to schedule USF in 1951. Ranked #13 after a perfect season, USF had two African American players, and the Bowl games were all in the Deep South. They were invited by the Orange bowl, but had to leave Ollie Matson and Burl Toler at home. Players unanimously voted to tell the bowl game to pound sand.
BTW, the Orange Bowl denies all of this. Said it never happened, said they invited two higher ranked teams, #9 Baylor and #4 Georgia Tech.
1951 was the last year USF played football. They closed their 9-0 season with a 20-2 victory over Loyola. USF's team produced nine NFL players, five of which became Pro Bowlers, three of which became Hall of Famers (St. Clair, Marchetti and Matson). Pete Rozelle was their publicist. Burl Toler became the first black official in the NFL.
