Interesting stat about Sosa.  He hit 60 PED-aided home runs three different times (1998, 1999, and 2001), the most career 60+ home run seasons.  But, although Sosa won the homerun crown twice (2000 and 2002), neither were in a year he hit 60+ home runs.  In 1998 and 1999 he was behind McGuire, and in 2001 he was behind Bonds.

'Roids gave rise to some interesting single-season HR statistics, like Sosa's as you pointed out.  Everyone knows Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001.  Less known is that Barry never had another season in which hit sixty home runs.  Or even fifty.  His next most was 49, the season prior in 2000.  And next most was 46. In fact, if you take away his 73 HR season, Bonds' numbers look a lot like Aaron's.

And speaking of Aaron, the 1973 Braves hit 206 HRs.  Must have been something in the water.  NL teams that year averaged 0.80 HRs per game, about average for the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The 39 year old Aaron hit 40 HRs.  Davey Johnson hit 43 and didn't hit more than 20 HRs in any other season.  Soon-to-be-Giant Darrell Evans hit 41. Evans hit 40 as a 38 year old, then 29 and 34 as a 39 and 40 year hold.  He hit 30 his last year with the GIants, otherwise, his HR totals were between 10 and 25 per season over a 21 year career.
