RPI is a very simple-minded calculation. If Team A beats #1 Pitt and loses to #333 Podunk Community College, and Team B loses to Pitt and beats #333, A and B will have the same base RPI. The only difference is that Team A would get a small bonus for "good win" and a penalty for a "bad loss" (not sure how much those adjustments would offset).
