David Shaw's time came, went and now it's gone, man, GONE. It is shrinking in the rear-view mirror. How much more unwatchable, exasperating, embarrassment can some of you guys absorb, for cryin' out loud?!
How far into the TANK must the program sink before you see the buck-naked emperor? How much longer are you going to listen to post-mortems about inadequacy of fricking EXECUTION? Hint: there will be no "execution" if you cannot (or WILL NOT) recruit enough studs athletically capable of it. And you sure as shiddt never will if you continue trying to force-fit players and staff competitively challenged at the FBS level.
Times change. Stanford Football, where the status quo has now calcified into a religious issue, has not. The now years-long record screams with evidence -- numerical, visual and "aromatic". Andy Grove said that only the paranoid survive. You detect any paranoia inside the hallowed halls of Arrillaga? All I see and hear is smug complacency. And, boy, is it on full display.
Great. Pick your next coach. Be specific. And by all means tell us why we should expect success when there is essentially no fan base, the Admin doesn’t seem to care, the student body doesn’t care etc.
You think there are people lining up for the job? Choices would be a so called up and comer. Like Scott Frost was. But apparently he shot his wad prior to Nebraska. Or Wilcox. Who looked promising for a couple years.
Maybe Brennan. Course it’s a big difference coaching at a lower level. Some make the leap. Others bomb out. Your guess is as good as mine.
Or you can get some coordinator from somewhere. In which one of two things happens, he has success for a couple years and then bolts for greener pastures; or he bombs out.
You’ve wanted a new HC for years. Fine. Name him.
The Shawpologists have now changed strategy, abandoning the first, second, and third lines of defense (i.e., "he really is a great coach; he really is a good coach; he's a good enough coach for Stanford"). And now it's: "Okay Mr. Longtime Fan, name the next guy who will be better. Be specific."
First of all, that's the AD's job - to have a short list of good coaching candidates at the ready for all sports, especially the majors. But good on you for asking Joe Fan, because why would anyone expect Bernard Muir to have a clue.
Second, $2-$3M will get an awful lot of candidates to sign. Maybe all of the up and comers (just find the Top 10 lower division coaches and find the best candidate).
Third, do you really think THIS coach can institute THE PROGRAM OVERHAUL/CULTURAL CHANGE that needs to happen to right the ship? Shaw's only chance at that is to clean house, transform into full CEO mode, and bring in some great, strong-willed coaches and give them the reigns to run their parts of the team. But do you see that happening, particularly on O where Shaw's hands are all over the Denny's Menu and headsets? If your answer is "No, I don't see that kind of change happening," then you have to go find the next coach. Or, you can putter along in this morass as sub .500 records rack up and the folks checking for vaccine shots are the only ones in the vicinity of the stadium when the games are being played.
It is a cold, harsh reality. But that's where things stand.
