I wonder if we'll see a strategic redshirt for one or two players next year to buy them an additional year of eligibility with the expectation that they'll be a grad transfer out once they get their Stanford degree. Or at this point, are incoming freshmen just betting that some of the older players will leave early for the tour?
As I understand it, women's golf is an equivalency sport, not a headcount sport, so they can spread out those 6 scholarships however they want. How on Earth Coach Walker has convinced some clearly elite golfers to take less than a full scholarship is an impressive feat.
Piggybacking on Hulk and looking at the WAGR, here's how things look:
1. Rose Zhang (Fr.)
2. Rachel Heck (So.)
17. Angelina Lei Ye (Jr.)
24. Megha Ganne (incoming Fr)
26. Aline Krauter (Sr.)
50. Caroline Sturdza (Fr.)
125. Brooke Seay (Jr.)
200. Sadie Englemann (So.)
450. Rebecca Becht (So.)
859. Calista Reyes (Sr.)
1055. Yu Wen Lu (Fr.)
Heck hasn't quite been herself in the couple of events she's played so far, but one assumes she'll be back challenging for titles soon. Seay isn't going away, either. I mean, a great problem to have, right? If you're Seay and you're squeezed out of the NCAA roster this year, do you really transfer out, knowing you have one more year and then you have a Stanford degree? Maybe Englemann transfers? But to what end? You're at Stanford, playing on an amazing golf team, and the likelihood of you going pro is fairly low. I mean, a redshirt year and then a grad transfer is a different story--I'm all in favor of folks getting a year of grad school at least partially on another school's dime.
