I don't read much into post-game press conferences, win or lose. The on-field performance speaks for itself. The pre-game pressers, where the coach talks about player availability, are much more useful.
Actually, I'd be more interested in what Shaw told the team in the locker room following that s**tshow. For whatever reason, he has failed as a teacher and motivator during this six-game losing streak. The fact that the team is regressing week-to-week for six weeks speaks for itself.
I admit that I didn't think it was possible, but we are entering 1983 territory. I wouldn't call the problem "softness," but really it's just semantics.
Having said all that--and I suppose it's a character flaw--I will always care about Stanford football.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
